How to mute audio on your Mac browser when you don’t know where it’s coming from This includes unexpected eagles screeching from a browser tab. On some models of Mac, if you boot your Mac with the volume muted, the chime will not sound. The second fix that you can try is resetting the PRAM on your Mac. To do this, perform these steps. Mute or unmute individual tabs. You can mute individual tabs by simply clicking on the speaker icon on the tab itself. As noted above, you can also click the speaker button in the address bar if you’re on a tab that’s currently playing audio. This too will mute or unmute that single tab. Mute or unmute all other tabs. In the Mail app on your Mac, select the conversation you want to mute. Click the Mute button in the Mail toolbar. The mute icon appears in the conversation’s messages in the message list.
Hi,
I have my iMac hooked up to an external audio interface via Firewire. Most of the time while I'm working, I listen to an internet radio station, which I have open in a separate browser window hidden behind the main browser window. If I need to quickly mute the sound – for instance, when I get a phone call – this is not always easy: I have to switch to the browser, then switch to the relevant browser window, then click on the 'stop' or 'mute' buttons on the internet radio player. I used to use a third party radio player app (Snowtape) with a customisable keyboard shortcut to mute and unmute the sound, but I had to stop using it; for some reason, it would no longer play nice with my favourite radio station once I upgraded to Lion.
So, my question: is there any way of setting up a system-wide keyboard shortcut that will toggle sound on and off?
Thanks,
